Surprising Facts About Dermal Fillers You Need to Know

Article At A Glance

  • Dermal fillers enhance features, reduce aging, and tighten skin by adding volume under the skin.
  • Dermal fillers promote collagen, last a year or more, and use ingredients like hyaluronic acid.

Dermal filler treatment is ideal for wrinkle reduction and achieving a younger, more rejuvenated appearance. Injectable fillers can also make subtle changes to the contours of your face that transform how you look. Although many people immediately think of Botox when they hear “injectable,” dermal fillers are in a class of their own, and some of the facts about them might surprise you.

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Unlike laser technology, chemical peels, and topical treatments like Retinol, dermal fillers work beneath the skin’s surface to reduce signs of aging. As a type of cosmetic procedure, getting fillers involves injecting a substance into the skin to increase facial volume, reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and enhance facial features.  Other purposes include plumping the lips, eliminating the lines that run from the side of the nose to the corners of the lips (nasolabial folds), reducing “marionette lines” that run from the corners of your mouth to the jawline, changing the shape of your chin, and even rejuvenating the skin on the back of your hands so it looks younger.

Botox injections temporarily freeze muscle movement to prevent facial wrinkles. Dermal injections work differently, correcting age-related issues like soft tissue volume loss by plumping specific areas to eliminate deep wrinkles, tightening loose skin, and reshaping your jawline contour.

Dermal Fillers Can Help Fight Aging

As we age, collagen production naturally slows down. Collagen is vital to young, smooth, and healthy-looking skin since it helps skin maintain moisture and elasticity. Fine lines, wrinkles, and other signs of aging occur when there’s a lack of collagen, but dermal fillers can help.

Several products contain ingredients that spur collagen production. Fillers that contain Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA), poly-lactic acid, and Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA) can also increase collagen around the injection site. By slowing down depletion, you may eventually need fewer injections or less product to achieve the desired results.

Results Last Up to a Year Or Longer

Unlike a surgical cosmetic procedure, the results of dermal filler treatments are often temporary. Depending on the specific filler used and where results may last a few months up to several years. On average, you’ll need additional injections to maintain the desired results after six to 18 months.

Many dermal fillers (in particular, those made from hyaluronic acid) are reversible if you’re unhappy with the results. Some people allow them to dissolve, while others receive an injection of the enzyme hyaluronidase to break down the filler and correct or change the results.

Some Dermal Fillers Are Completely Natural

Many people are cautious about dermal fillers because they don’t want to inject chemicals into their bodies or have allergic reactions or a bad outcome. However, one reason these treatments are so popular is their safety, and when you work with a trained and experienced provider, the results are consistent and reliable.

Another reason for dermal fillers’ popularity is that many of the most frequently used products use natural ingredients. For example, Juvederm and Restylane, two of the most common fillers, contain hyaluronic acid, which occurs naturally in the body and keeps the skin hydrated. Hyaluronic acid is common in many moisturizers and cleansers and doesn’t cause allergic reactions.

Other filler products contain collagen, which naturally smooths the skin and increases suppleness. Although some products use synthetic or animal-derived ingredients, many are vegan and biodegradable.

Dermal Fillers Are Non-Invasive

Plastic surgery may produce more drastic and permanent results. However, the expense, recovery time, and potential for pain and other side effects have many patients reluctant to go under the knife. Dermal filler injections are a faster, non-invasive alternative; in an hour or less, you can visit the office for treatment and immediately return to normal activities. In most cases, side effects are mild and limited to swelling, redness, or bruising at the injection site, all of which typically fade within a few days.

Fillers Can Target Specific Facial Areas

If you choose to undergo dermal filler treatment, the first step is a consultation with a medical provider to clarify your goals and desired results. Doctors customize treatments to each patient, tailoring the amount of product and precise placement to ensure a natural look. It’s possible to target specific areas on the face, hands, neck, ears, and spots where you want to replace lost soft tissue volume.

That said, dermal injections aren’t suitable for the breasts or buttocks. The FDA does not approve these injections for those areas, as there is a significant risk for complications, including lumps and bumps, filer migration, and infection. Not to mention, using fillers in those areas would require far more injections than in smaller areas like the face.
